Successful Transition from Year 6 to Year 7

Year 6 transition is a pivotal time in a young person's life.  We know that social connectiveness, personalised support and knowing about each student's background is fundamental to its success.

Seamless Transition: Your Journey to Uckfield College

We understand that moving to secondary school is a big step, and we're committed to making your child's transition to Uckfield College as smooth and exciting as possible. Our comprehensive transition programme begins well before Year 7.

Year 5: Getting to Know Us

Masterclasses and Clubs: Students from our partner primary schools are invited to after-school masterclasses and clubs at Uckfield College, including Chess Club, Maths Masterclasses, English Sessions, Computing Lessons, and Science Rocket Club. Year 5 students are also invited to our matinee performance of our College show.

Primary School PE Sessions: Our PE department regularly runs sessions at our partner primary schools throughout the year.

Year 6: Preparing for Your Future

Open Evening: At the start of Year 6, we host our highly enjoyable Open Evening for prospective students and their families. This is a fantastic opportunity to visit the College, meet our Principal, Mrs Marshallsay, hear from our current students, and explore our wonderful facilities and broad curriculum.

Open Mornings: Throughout September, you can also visit the College during the school day to experience College life firsthand. To book a tour, please email office@uckfield.college or call 01825 764844.

Primary School Collaboration: Once a place is gained, we work closely with primary schools to ensure a comprehensive understanding of each student and to build upon their prior learning.

Home Visits: To accelerate us getting to know the student and their family, a member of staff will visit each home in Term 6 to build relationships and develop our understanding.

Summer Term Transition Days: We hold two Transition Days for all students in Term 6.  This allows children to experience lessons, meet their Form Mentor, and connect with their new Mentor Group before September.  There are additional Transition Days for children with EHCPs and a ‘Solo Flyers’ Day to support children who are coming alone from their primary schools.

Parent Information Evening: We hold a special welcome evening for new parents and carers, in which we provide useful information and support.

Year 7: Thriving in Your New Environment

Habits of Champions Evenings: Throughout Year 7, we run an extensive series of meetings and information evenings for parents, including Subject Teacher Evenings. These sessions help you understand and support your child's learning journey.

Building Friendships: We organise activities and sessions, such as the ‘Year 7 Get Together’, to help students build new friendships and settle into their new peer groups.  We also support the students in the Year 7 Garden at social times to develop positive relationships with one another.

We believe this comprehensive package of support ensures all students have a successful start to their education at Uckfield College and our approach has been shared with all secondary schools in East Sussex as the very best practice.
