Holocaust Study Day Year 12 Thursday 8th March

On Thursday the RS Department held a study day for Year 12 students about the Holocaust. All of Year 12 were given an introduction to the Holocaust by the RS department.  Two students from Year 13, Charlotte Ashby and Sarah Newman, made a presentation to everyone about their recent involvement in the Auschwitz project, where they visited Auschwitz for themselves.  This was a very moving presentation and really captured their experience. After a break, Year 12 were given a talk by Dorit Oliver-Wolfe, a Holocaust survivor turned pop star. She gave an inspiring talk about her experiences in a camp when she was just five years old and how her life developed after this.  She managed to remain positive and humorous throughout her talk and we all felt it was a privilege and an inspiration to be able to meet someone face to face who had been through such traumatic historical events. Many students and teachers bought copies of her book at the end of her talk, which she signed for them. The RS department then treated her to lunch in the staffroom, where she continued to recall some important life lessons for us.  It was an emotional and inspirational day and a true pleasure to have her in our school once again.

Chess Club Update: The Uckfield College A Team went to play their second round fixture in the Butler Cup against the very strong Hurstpierpoint College A team and Brighton College B team. The team played valiantly and ended in second place, winning 6 and drawing 2 games out of a possible 12. Of the 4 games that the team lost, 3 were against players who play for England. This means that the team will progress to compete for the Butler Plate.

Very large congratulations go to:

Benedict Weis (2 draws and a win)

Troy Southall (1 win and 2 close defeats to England players)

Lydia Munn (2 wins and a loss on points to an England player)

Bobbie Ridley (2 wins and a loss)

College students, as part of the Nutley Junior Squash team, played the Lewes Junior Squash Team away to Lewes on 25 February.  Megan Tweed (Year 7), Zac Ruane and Alex Elliot (both in Year 9) and Year 6 student Jaime Pinner played well and with determination to take the most points on the day.  Some matches were won by the Nutley players and some by the Lewes team. The points keep the team at the top of the Division 5 league for Sussex with Home games to follow in March and April.  Well done team.

Congratulations to Mollie Williams in 11k who has won a place at The British Racing School in Newmarket.  The British Racing School is a Centre of Excellence for training in the horseracing world.
