Winter Donation Week: Report by Rhiannon Hobby (Year 12, Uckfield Leos’ Secretary)

At the end of last term the College participated in a donation week for the Uckfield Food Bank. This was organised by the Uckfield Leos, which is the UCTC branch of the Uckfield Lions; as a group we raise money for charities and other organisations who provide assistance to those in need.

At the end of the week nearly 450 items had been collected. The food and necessities donated went to helping people in Uckfield and the surrounding areas. During the winter, in a time when many of us are fortunate to be surrounded by family and friends, the food donated helped the Food Bank provide relief to those who could not support themselves.

There will be other donation weeks organised by the Uckfield Leos during the academic year, but we would like to thank everyone who donated so generously to our Winter Donation Week.

The College Chess Club is still strong and has been making excellent progress.  We have had 17 members attending this last term with good attendance each week and the enthusiasm and commitment has been really good from those attending.

The winning College team from the local Academy event in October

Last term was an outstanding term for competitive chess outside the school.

At the last local Academy event in the last holiday we had a very good team of no less than nine players:- Joshua & Oliver Christian, Anna Sherriff, Oliver Burchett, Bobbie Ridley, Lydia Munn, Benedict Weis, Troy Southall and Michael Stockham, with all doing well in securing another Top School trophy with a convincing total; Troy came third with 4.5/6 but Michael had a brilliant day with a perfect 6/6 to win the tournament; Joshua, Benedict, Oliver and Lydia all won their year group medals and Michael won the speedster award as the quickest finisher.  At the Sussex Grand Prix tournament at Horsham, Benedict Weis had a really good score of 2.5/6 in the Under-18 Major and in the Minor tournament Anna Sherriff had a really good score of 3/5 and won a grading prize.

In the Sussex schools championship at Under-13 we only had Dino Buckwell and although he did fine with 2/6, he needed another two players to make a team score; this was worse if anything in the Under-18 tournament as Michael scored 2.5/6 and Benedict had a great day on 3/5 but they needed one more player to make a team score and win a team trophy, all of which was sad on Michael’s last year as we have won both of these championships previously. At the later Sussex Girls championship in early December, we did this much better and Anna with 2/5, Zoe Mileman with 2.5/5 and Lydia with 3/5 (coming sixth and as the equal Sussex Under-14 Girls champion) at last brought the Under-18 Girls championship to the College for the first time in many years ! They only did so by one point, but that matters little as we now have three of the four major secondary level Sussex trophies in the school cabinet.

Our school teams in the Under-14 Butler Cup have been triumphant with the A team of Benedict, Troy, Lydia and Bobbie in the preliminary round beating St Andrew’s, Brambletye A and Lewes Old Grammar with a perfect 12-0 unbeaten score;  not to be outdone, our B team of Oliver Burchett, Anna, Dino and Oliver Christian did exactly the same to Great Walstead and Brambletye B, winning 12-0 again!  It is always good to beat all of those other schools, particularly as many of them are coached by fellow Sussex coaches!  Bobbie has now played his first full game of the season for the second team of Uckfield Chess Club, whilst Benedict and Michael remain unbeaten, the latter having played also in the first team.  It seems that our standards are remaining high in the club, which shows what a great place it is to learn this great game whilst we have all of this talent.  Congratulations to all; we are very proud of our team!

This term we will be re-starting the after school sessions on Tuesday 9th January and there will be five sessions up to and including Tuesday 6th February until the next holiday. The fee for next term as always will be the discounted £15.00 payable online.  There is no need for a registration form if one has already been completed unless there is a change to any of the information.

Luca Major-Owens and Tabby Coddington represented Uckfield College at the British School Gymnastics Association (BSGA), South East Regional Trampoline Competition 2017 in Gilingham on Sunday 26th November.

They both did great routines for their respective groups and Luca managed to top her birthday with coming first and bringing home the Gold. Unfortunately Tabby didn't manage to place for a medal but huge congratulations to both of them!

DLTA (Deborah Lamb Theatre Arts) students are currently in panto at Eastbourne Devonshire Park. The show opened on 8th December and each dancer does 31 shows the last being on 14th January. Each team consisted of 8 dancers, Below are photos of the UCTC girls in Red Team and Blue Team.  Well done to all involved; we are sure that as well as being great fun, the pantomime season is very hard work!

Red Team: Gracie Hancock (Yr 10) as senior dancer, Lucy woolgar (Yr 9) and Ida Larkin (Yr 8) as intermediate dancers and chorus Becky Chapman (Yr 8), Jana Irvine (Yr 8)and Ella Hancock (Yr 7)

Blue Team: Holly Bingham (Yr 12) as senior dancer with Heidi Lane (Yr 11) as intermediate and Izzy Chesson (Yr 9) and Nathalie Van-Damme (Yr 9) as chorus.

Congratulations to Gracie Hancock (Year 10) who, back in December, auditioned for the CAT Team at 'The Place', a dance school in London.  We are delighted to learn that Gracie has been accepted and asked back for another year. In their offer the dance school said that last year’s teaching team had recognised Gracie’s dance potential, hard work and commitment throughout the year.  Well done Gracie!
